Default Beat Pulp???

I have heard so many different opinions about beat pulp. Some say its great and other say its just an empty filler. Anyone else feed beat pulp? Good or bad results?

Honestly I have heard the same things as you about BP. I do know that it seems to help lubricate the horses's digestive system and keep "things moving" and for this reason my horse gets a scoop per day, (in addition to pellets) but I am not sure what the nutritional value is. I think it is also fairly high in sugar, but there are a lot of people who use it to help get weight on a horse and swear by it.

Here is an interesting article I found on BP The Myths and Reality of Beet Pulp - Susan Evans Garlinghouse

It outlines some of the common myths and frustrations with BP.

According to the article you posted it is considerably low in sugar.

Hmm yes I see that. gee I guess I really don't know what I am feeding my horse then! All I know is that is what my barn offers- that and pellets so that is what he gets!

Default Beet Pulp.

I like to use beet pulp in all my horses.

Specially in the winter time. I serve it slightly warm for dinner mixed with flatted oats and any vitamins and supplements that the horses get. I tend to feed a lot of it as I like the horses to be full. And it helps with the hay intake with out cutting out the fiber.

I have never had a horse colic while on beet pulp. (Yet knock on wood) I find it helps keep the digestion flowing. And helps with water in take in the winter.

Thumbs up

I've used beetpulp for the longest time with my ponies. I found that it worked for some of them, but not as a steady weight gainer & maintainer for others. I got my Standardbred mare this past June, and she was very underweight.. So, like many other underweight horses I brought home in hope of saving, I thought I would do research on what I could really feed her to fatten her up fast as oppose to beetpulp and other costly performance feeds.
Purina sells a brand called Trimax - and it's the most fastest weight gainer/maintainer I have ever used! It contains 3 major fuel sources that are key features in weight gain - fat, starch and fibre (BP obviously) as well as it contains Omega 3&6. I think it's the greatest feed - everything is combine into one with equal amounts, so it's not like you have to 'dick' around with trying to measure stuff out, and wonder if you really are feeding enough.
I also feed Krunch - by Masterfeeds.. Another weight maintainer plain cube.
*My typical feeding schedule for this mare is: 2 average size scoops of Trimax, 1 scoop of rolled oats (I feed this for energy, as she is up there in age), 1 scoop of Krunch, 2 tbsp of Corn Oil - for a healthy coat, and of course, carrots!

Here's the websites for both brands:

Krunch: Horse Krunch cubes

Wink

Any horse that I have ridden that gets BP seem to do well on it regardless of age or condition. I have had a horse colic though while getting BP so that rules out the "horses won't colic on BP" theory...
