Question Saddles?

I might get a jumping saddle? Could I do flat with it? Or would I have to get another saddle?

BTW= I am new. Sorry if this is in the wrong column thing.

Hi there,
Doing flat work in a close contact jumping saddle can certainly be done, but if you are planning on doing a lot of flat (or dressage) as well as jumping, and don't want to get two saddles, I would opt for an all purpose saddle instead. Jumping saddles typically do not put you in the greatest position for flat work, but I know there are some eventing saddles on the market with a deeper seat and longer flap that are good for flat work too so I would definately look around.

What is your main discipline? I know with Hunter/Jumpers, a large majority of people ride in close contacts for both flat work and jumping. Those saddles are made for that. There are close contacts out there with more padding in the flaps so you are not so "perched" out there for flat work.

How high are you planning to jump? I second the all-purpose suggestion. All-purposes are great. You can ride in it for flat work, some dressage, trails, small jumps, etc. However, if you intend on jumping anything over 2'- I would recommend investing in a close contact saddle.

Regarding the all-purpose saddle, a little jumping is for sure OK with an all- purpose. However, if you were doing it competitively and a lot of it, you would want real a jumping saddle.
