Calypso has had a rough time! She is ready for somebody to love and cherish her. A family with a kind, loving, patient and reward-based attitude toward her. My heart breaks for this little girl .. her face and body always appear to look tense and defensive, when truly .. she is the sweetest and most intelligent little mare. She literally melts into you when you spend time just stroking her, telling her she will be OK, and giving her the attention and love that she so deserves.
On top of the obvious emotional tell-tale signs that she has likely been manhandled in the past, the poor baby has been eaten alive by the Florida bugs .. and that has been neglected by previous owners. She has rubbed her mane to tufts, she has rubbed the top of her tail almost raw, she also has signs of white scarring on her neck and hips, and parts of her face where she has rubbed herself raw. Could this girl have suffered any more discomfort?
The distrust she has toward humans is obvious (and can we blame her?). If she is out to pasture alone or with other horses, take feed and a ton of patience .. she will not be readily caught. If she out to pasture with another, simply bring the other horse in first and Calypso will help you put her halter on!!!
She does not like being in the stall for long periods of time. She is fine for an hour or two, then she will begin to get a little impatient and make it known she would like to go out! She is definitely a horse that will need a buddy (pasture, trail rides) for her ultimate welfare. She is very anxious to go out with her pasture buddy, and gets extremely upset when the other comes in without her. She does not do anything silly, but will call loudly and start to pace. She is submissive with other horses, and although she longs to be close to them, she keeps a healthy distance for fear of being bitten or kicked.
She x-ties just fine for bathing, grooming, farrier, vet etc. She loaded quickly in our trailer with the assistance of a lunge line across her quarters. She does pull ugly faces when being saddled, and she will lift her leg but not actually kick out. Again, this is the result of poor or heavy handling in her past. We can retrain many things, but some emotional scars run too deep for us to fix, unfortunately. At 15 years old, there is hope with the right person, she will eventually trust again .. but for now, we understand why she reacts this way. She takes the bridle very easily.
She is a very forward going mare. She has not tried to buck, bolt, rear or spook .. but she is barn sour when being trained/ridden alone. You will see from her video that she does move fast, but does not appear to have been trained with the correct paso gait. (Excuse my terminology, I am not familiar with this breed). The western rider in the video assures me that Calypso is very, very smooth. Her rein back is excellent.
She would make a fantastic trail horse for an intermediate to experienced rider. I would only not recommend her for a novice due to the fact that she has the above described issues, which could be intimidating to a non-experienced horse person. I would recommend that if you wanted to adopt her as your trail buddy/best friend .. that you have another horse/pony that Calypso can pasture with .. and that you have somebody to trail ride with initially, until you have established a bond together.
Due to the discomfort Calypso experiences with the bugs down here in hot and humid Central Florida, an adoptive home up north would be ideal.
Calypso is available for adoption to an outstanding, loving, permanent, EXPERIENCED and approved home only. She has been through enough already, it is time to enjoy her golden years with somebody who can truly love her and appreciate her for who she is, and what this poor little girl has obviously been through. There is a marshmallow under that iron exterior she pretends to put up!
She has never once attempted to bite, kick or hurt anybody. She really is a gentle soul who just lacks trust at this time.
Apart from any issues described above, I have seen no other vices with Calypso (cribbing, weaving, windsucking etc).

Calypso is up to date with current negative coggins and farrier. Her shots will be due and she could possibly use a dental, too.
If you read any of our horse ads, you will notice that we are brutally honest in the description of our horses. We provide many photographs (See Image Gallery), videos and a "warts and all" description of each horse. Our goal is to match the right horse to rider .. this helps guarantee a loving, happy, safe and long-term relationship between horse and owner. We encourage you to be very honest about your level of experience, your riding ability and your current financial obligations! Remember, the least expensive part is buying the horse, it is the maintenance that hits the wallet! This is a long term emotional, physical and financial commitment - please be honest with yourself that you are ready to take on your next horse!
